Cost Breakdown
How to Use This Tool
Follow these steps to calculate your consignment costs accurately:
- Select your preferred currency from the dropdown at the top of the tool.
- Enter your product cost per unit and total quantity of units (both required fields).
- Fill in optional cost fields: shipping, packaging per unit, listing fees, insurance, and consignee commission rate.

- Click the Calculate Costs button to see your detailed breakdown.
- Use the Reset button to clear all fields and start over, or Copy Results to save your breakdown.
Formula and Logic
The calculator uses standard consignment cost accounting practices for small businesses and traders:
- Total Product Cost = Product Cost per Unit ร Quantity
- Total Packaging Cost = Packaging Cost per Unit ร Quantity
- Total Upfront Costs = Total Product Cost + Total Packaging Cost + Shipping + Insurance + Flat Listing Fees
- Commission Amount (if applicable) = (Expected Sales Price ร Quantity) ร (Commission Rate รท 100)
- Total Consignment Costs = Total Upfront Costs + Commission Amount (if commission rate and sales price are provided)
- Break-Even Price per Unit = Total Consignment Costs รท Quantity
All non-required fields default to 0 if left empty, so you only need to enter costs relevant to your consignment agreement.
Practical Notes
Consignment agreements vary widely across industries, so adjust inputs to match your specific contract terms:
- Consignee commission rates typically range from 10% to 40% in retail and e-commerce consignment models.
- Shipping costs may be split between consignor and consignee โ only enter the portion you are responsible for.
- Break-even pricing excludes taxes and payment processing fees, which you may need to factor into final pricing separately.
- For cross-border consignments, use the currency of your agreement to avoid exchange rate discrepancies in calculations.
- Platform listing fees may be flat or percentage-based โ use the flat fee field for fixed costs, and factor percentage fees into your sales price instead.
Why This Tool Is Useful
Consignment selling reduces inventory risk for retailers but can obscure true costs for sellers if all expenses are not tracked:
- Avoid underpricing your products by accounting for all upfront and commission-based costs.
- Compare consignment offers from multiple retailers by standardizing cost calculations across agreements.
- Set minimum sales price thresholds to protect your profit margins before signing consignment contracts.
- Quickly adjust calculations for changing shipping rates, commission structures, or product costs without manual math errors.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is consignment commission calculated on sales price or cost?
Commission is almost always calculated as a percentage of the final sales price (revenue) in standard consignment agreements. This calculator follows that convention โ if your agreement uses cost-based commission, enter your total cost as the sales price to calculate the correct amount.
What if I don't know the consignee's commission rate yet?
Leave the commission rate field empty or set to 0. The calculator will still show your total upfront costs and break-even price based on expenses you do know. You can return to add the commission rate once it is confirmed.
Can I use this for international consignment agreements?
Yes โ use the currency dropdown to select the currency of your consignment agreement. All cost fields and results will display in that currency, but note that the calculator does not account for exchange rate fluctuations or cross-border tariffs.
Additional Guidance
For accurate results, gather all relevant documents before using the tool:
- Your wholesale or manufacturing cost per unit for the product
- Shipping invoices or quotes for sending inventory to the consignee
- Your consignment agreement outlining commission rates and fee responsibilities
- Any platform or marketplace fees for listing the products
Review your consignment contract carefully โ some agreements require sellers to cover return shipping or damaged inventory costs, which are not included in this calculator by default.
