Formula and Logic
This tool calculates future wealth using two core components: compound interest on your initial lump sum, and a growing annuity for your regular monthly contributions.
For the initial investment, we use the standard compound interest formula: FV = PV × (1 + r/n)^(nt), where PV is initial principal, r is annual interest rate, n is compounding periods per year, and t is time in years.
For monthly contributions, we use a period-by-period loop to account for annual contribution increases and your selected compounding frequency. Each compounding period, we add the prorated monthly contributions for that period, then apply periodic interest. Contribution amounts increase annually by your specified percentage.
Total interest earned is calculated as final balance minus total contributions (initial investment plus all periodic contributions).
Practical Notes
Keep these finance-specific factors in mind when using this planner:
- Compound interest grows faster over longer time horizons: even small rate differences have major impacts over 20+ years.
- Tax implications: this tool does not account for capital gains tax, dividend tax, or retirement account tax benefits. Adjust your expected rate downward if you hold taxable investments.
- Inflation: the results show nominal (not inflation-adjusted) wealth. To estimate real purchasing power, subtract ~2-3% annual inflation from your expected interest rate.
- Contribution consistency: this tool assumes you make all planned contributions on time. Missing contributions will lower your final balance.
- Rate variability: historical market returns average ~7% annually for diversified stock portfolios, but past performance does not guarantee future results. Use conservative rates for safety.
Why This Tool Is Useful
This planner helps you align your savings habits with long-term financial goals:
- Set realistic targets for retirement, home down payments, or education savings.
- Test how small changes (e.g., increasing monthly contributions by $50, or adding a 2% annual raise) impact your final wealth.
- Compare different investment options by adjusting interest rates and compounding frequencies.
- Visualize how compounding accelerates wealth growth over time, even with modest contributions.
- Share projections with financial planners or partners to align on savings strategies.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a reasonable annual interest rate to use?
For diversified stock and bond portfolios, 5-8% is a common long-term estimate. High-yield savings accounts typically offer 1-4%, while individual stocks can vary widely. Use a conservative rate (e.g., 5%) for safe projections.
Does this tool account for inflation?
No, all results are nominal (not adjusted for inflation). To estimate real purchasing power, reduce your expected annual interest rate by 2-3% (the historical average inflation rate) before entering it into the tool.
Can I use this for retirement planning?
Yes, this tool is well-suited for retirement projections. Enter your current retirement savings as the initial lump sum, your monthly retirement contributions, and your expected retirement timeline as the time horizon. Adjust for planned contribution increases as your income grows.
Additional Guidance
For the most accurate results, use conservative estimates for interest rates and contribution amounts. Review your projections annually and adjust inputs as your income, expenses, or financial goals change. Consider consulting a certified financial planner to align your accumulation strategy with tax laws and estate planning needs. If you have high-interest debt (e.g., credit cards), prioritize paying that off before increasing investment contributions, as debt interest rates often exceed investment returns.
